R&D Programme · Early Stage

Where software
meets the physical world.

RoboticX is our long-term R&D programme exploring the convergence of cloud intelligence, AI, and physical automation. We're at the beginning — building the foundations that will eventually let software reach beyond the screen.

This programme is actively developing. Details will expand as research matures.

The Programme

Why Orion is investing in RoboticX

The most transformative shift in the next decade won't happen purely in software. It will happen at the boundary — where AI-driven systems begin to perceive, decide, and act in the physical world.

RoboticX is our structured bet on that future. Drawing on our core expertise in cloud architecture, AI systems, and real-time data — we're exploring how those foundations translate to autonomous, connected physical systems.

This is a long-horizon programme. We're building carefully, with rigorous R&D and selective partnerships. We're not rushing to market — we're building the right foundations first.

Phase 1
Research & Foundation

Defining the technical architecture, identifying core use cases, and building internal capability across sensing, control systems, and cloud integration.

Cloud-Native

Systems designed to run on the infrastructure we already build and operate.

AI-First

Every system starts with intelligence — not as a feature but as the foundation.

Research Focus

Areas we're exploring

These are the initial domains guiding our research. They will evolve as we learn.

Edge AI & Inference

Running ML inference at the edge — on embedded hardware close to sensors and actuators — where latency and reliability matter most.

Autonomous Control Systems

Designing feedback loops and decision-making architectures for systems that operate autonomously in dynamic, unstructured environments.

Cloud-to-Robot Integration

Bridging physical systems with cloud backends — real-time telemetry, over-the-air updates, remote monitoring, and fleet management on AWS and Azure.

Computer Vision

Perception systems that let machines understand their environment — object detection, spatial reasoning, and situational awareness in real time.

Human-Robot Interaction

Designing interfaces and protocols that make working alongside autonomous systems natural, safe, and effective for humans.

More to come

Focus areas expand as research matures. If you're working in a related domain and want to explore a partnership, we'd like to hear from you.

Programme Roadmap

Where we're headed

A long-term view of how we're building this programme over time.

Phase 1 — Now Active

Research & Internal Capability

Establishing the R&D programme, identifying technical focus areas, hiring domain experts, and building internal knowledge around robotics systems and their cloud integration points.

Phase 2 Upcoming

Prototype & Proof of Concept

Building first functional prototypes in controlled environments. Validating core assumptions around edge AI performance, cloud connectivity, and autonomy at small scale.

Phase 3 Planned

Pilot Deployments

Working with select partners to deploy systems in real environments — gathering data, iterating on performance, and proving reliability under real-world conditions.

Phase 4 Long-term

Commercial Programme

Launching repeatable, commercially available robotics solutions built on the foundations established in earlier phases.
